Wine Affair: Kenyan Edition of Sommelier World Cup Launch

12 March of 2019 by

Some people have the coolest jobs, this is what we thought when we got to see some of Kenya’s top sommeliers in action at the Sierra Burger and Wine Restaurant earlier this month. A sommelier is a trained and knowledgeable wine professional, normally working in fine restaurants, who specializes in all aspects of wine service as well as wine and food pairing. To be a good one you have to be passionate about wine and keep learning more and more about it.

The launch of the Kenyan Edition of the tri-annual Sommelier World Cup was both educative and fun. The event attracted trade and media personalities who made it refreshing. There were many knowledgeable minds to compare notes with and get recommendations on which stands had the best selections.

The Exhibitors

East Africa Glass Mart, Browns Cheese, Casks and Barrels, DGB Wines, Jos Hansen, KWAL, Mohans Oysterbay MIA Wines, The Wine Shop Kenya, UTI- East Africa were prepared with different varieties of their South African wines.

The Wines

We got some pointers from the sommeliers as to what makes up the wines they were offering. The Excelsior Cabarnet Sauvignon was one of the red dry wines that stood out as did the Bellignham Shiraz “The Vergelegen Sauvignon blanc had the right balance of fruit and acidity that made it very light and easy. The cheese board was also a hit as it made us appreciate the different flavours in the wines.

The Competition

“This competition, with finals happening in Cape Town in September,  is open to individuals working in the wine trade and will draw entries from Kenya, Ghana, Zimbabwe, China, USA, Sweden, Netherlands and the UK,” explained Wanjiru of Winenjiru who organized the event. The Africa Market Manager of Wines of South Africa (WOSA), Mr Matome Mbatha was also present

The Kenyan competition will be held on Thursday 4 April 2019.  And entries can be submitted through the WOSA website:www.wosa.co.za/sommelier. Registration deadline is Friday 29 March 2019. Kenya so far has a 17 contestants https://www.wosa.co.za/Sommeliercup/SomCup19-Participating-Countries-Kenya.Geoffrey Kariuki who is the Director at Sommelier’s Palate and was one of the 2016 finalists.
