Why We Love Maluda’s Comeback EP ‘In My Own Words’

When Maluda said he was making a comeback, he meant every word. His debut EP In My Own Words is a solid Gospel music collection, with a well-curated selection of songs. It is an intricate exploration of Hip Hop sub-genres such as Boom Bap and Drill and other genres like Dancehall.

The EP has six songs which include Uwezo, Lazima Nijue, Vipi Jo, Mungu Tu, Go Getter, and Mahida Mothe. According to Maluda, this EP was named ‘In My Own Words’ as he uses it to tell his story. “In 2019-2020 I went through an event that left me dealing with trauma. The situation left me and my dad not seeing eye to eye, and relationships with relatives were broken. In this situation I figured out certain things until you are facing it no one can tell your story on your behalf. That’s why I named it In My Own Words.” He says.

With his characteristic deep voice, Maluda delivers his bars with so much finesse oscillating from vulnerability in songs such as Mahida Mothe to upbeat vibes in the dancehall tune Vipi Jo. Maluda’s delivery oozes confidence and exceptional skill. Additionally, his lyrics are witty with Sheng rhymes, paying homage to his Jericho Estate upbringing. This is most evident in Lazima Nijue, Mungu Tu, and Uwezo.

In My Own Words

Apart from flaunting his songwriting and delivery skills, The Uwezo rapper also showcases his versatility in Go Getter featuring Ben Cyco. The Afro-pop tune is a little outside his usual sound. However, he still manages to drop bars while maintaining the music chemistry with Ben.

On the collaborators’ panel are Ben Cyco, Bernabas, Shem, and Scar Mkadinali sprinkling their individuality adding a sparkle of variety to the EP. As for audio production, In My Own Words went through the capable hands of super producers Vicky Pon Dis and Motif On The Beat.

Without a doubt, Maluda’s ability to exalt God in such a creative manner makes him a comeback artist to watch out for. His renewed energy to make music is clear. In My Own Words is a well put sonically aesthetic collection and it deserves a slot on your playlists. Stream it on your music digital streaming platform of choice here.
