This is the question in some of our minds right after electing new leaders in the General Elections that just took place.
An account on Twitter by the name TV Deets seems to have been the first to break the news although a Real Housewives of Nairobi trailer was published on Instagram and YouTube a while back. “Real Housewives franchises have been officially green-lit for Pretoria, South Africa, and Nairobi, Kenya.”
The “Real Housewives Franchise owned by Bravo TV started in the United States over a decade ago and followed mostly rich wives in their day-to-day lives. The show recently came to Africa with a Johanaberg, Durban, and more recently Lagos chapter. There’s a Kenyan Somali housewive in the Dubai Housewives too.
Kenyans on Twitter reacted to the news by suggesting who they feel may represent us well but some do not think we have the right or enough personalities to give good TV! “These Real Housewives of Nairobi cast suggestions are giving me high blood pressure. We really don’t need a Nairobi franchise pls, it’s not a must” tweeted Ladie Valeri. Reality TV in Kenya is already thriving with celebrities like Bahati, Sauti Sol, The Mathenges and the Kyallo sisters among others on platforms like Showmax and YouTube.
This same debate ensued when Young, Famous, and African debuted on Netflix. The hit show did not have any Kenyans in it.
Those looking forward to it have listed names such as Fashionable Stepmum, Anita Nderu, Kate the Actress, Akothee, Angel Lately, Sona Maheralil and others as some of the women they would like to see on the show.
We hope the cat will be out of the designer bag soon.
