‘Tis definitely the season to be jolly! Besides international acts such as Drake, J. Cole, Childish Gambino and more releasing their projects this December, Victoria Kimani has also decided to follow this trend to release her debut album, Safari on the 4th of December which is this Sunday!
Having spoken about it before, Victoria said that the album is a summation of her life, in a way. She also said that she needed people to understand the type of artist she is through it, that’s why she released singles in different places which eventually ended up being hits.
The 15 track album has features such as Hiplife Ghanaian artist, Sarkodie (on Giving You), (sexy) South African artist Donald (Fade Away), King Kaka (On My D), Ice Prince (For You), Phyno (Lover), Emma Nyra, Vanessa Mdee and Bucie (S.O.S). Victoria also teamed up with Jesee Jagz, who’s popularly known for his track “Bad Girl” ft. Wizkid. The track, called Black Girl, was produced by Jagz himself.
It also features records that we have already heard and probably grown to love such as All The Way (ft. Khuli Chana), who recorded his verse on the same day the video was being shot. All The Way was produced by a Nigerian, Reinhard, who also featured on this season of Coke Studio Africa.
Other familiar tracks are Gota (ft. Airline), which you can listen to here, as well as read my review of it. Gota was also produced by Reinhard Tega. My Money, released in October, also features on the album.
As shown in the tracklist, Victoria is all about diversity as she has, not only experimented with the artists, but has also had different producers work on the project. Popular South African producer, DJ Maphorisa worked on her record with King Kaka, On My D.
From previous conversation on the album with Elle Magazine South Africa, Victoria Kimani had stated that it would be released in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria and possibly a couple more countries because, she says, “That is another way of legitimizing the soul of the record.” Since she has collaborated with different artists, has experimented with different sounds and has fans in different regions in Africa (and the world) she feels the need to take the album to the people on the ground. The album will of course be available on iTunes as well as hard copies as is the norm.
