Discover This Hidden Gem In Rusinga Island

The year is almost winding up and there is no better time to start planning for your holidays. If you are like me then you know just how important it is to test out a destination before dragging the entire family into it.  Doing this ensures we weed out any possible disappointments and guarantees peace and harmony for everyone and let’s be honest it’s also a great excuse to get away for a few weekends.

This year’s research started off at the newly established Lorateng Resort Rusinga. I’m a sucker for boutique establishments, I find them cozy, warm, and intimate. Rusinga resort is just that. This hidden gem is located in Rusinga Island, Homabay county.

You can make your way there by Air through Kisumu or by road either through Narok or Nakuru. We went by road allowing us to take in the scenic views plus the numerous stopovers making the journey all the more memorable. To get to the island we boarded the water bus which was quite interesting. There is also the option of using the ferry which is also an experience for those who don’t get seasick like some of us.

The resort sits right next to the water allowing you to enjoy the sound of the waves as you sleep or as you enjoy your cocktail during sunset on the deck. The deck was my favorite part, made from warm wood spectacularly finished with a touch of class and excellence.

Generally, this place exudes elegance with the African touches of the décor reminding you of the beauty that is the African heritage. I think we don’t celebrate enough just how beautiful our country and culture is.

Currently, they have three modern units housed in one block and six cottages bringing the total capacity to 18 pax. Their rooms are super spacious and their cottages come with mountain bikes for those who are into fitness or some adventure.

There is an in-house speed boat if you are looking to enjoy some water activity while there. Other activities include sports fishing, darts, archery, cycling, nature trails, and island tours which are organized on request.

As for the food, it would be a sin not to try their fish, which comes in fresh from the lake as you wait. There is just something special about fresh fish, it just tastes better.

Rusinga resort is not only beautiful but also super affordable with their single rooms going for 2500 and 4000 for doubles for bed and breakfast. Cottages vary in size and pricing but I can assure you they are worth the dime.

After spending a weekend here, I didn’t want to come back but then again I’m not part of the dynasty so we gotta work. I was however super refreshed and I can surely and confidently recommend this place for some travel therapy.
