The Very Unusual Way Nairobi Will Be Celebrating ‘World Cucumber Day’

Forget carrying around cash and credit cards – pick up a humble cucumber!

In what will be a first for Nairobi, a week long celebration of cucumbers (yes – that’s an actual thing) will take place across the city from the 7th – 14th June 2018.

And the concept is simple enough – if not quite unusual: exchange a cucumber for a Hendrick’s Gin & Tonic at nine participating establishments around Nairobi that will be participating in the cucumber exchange.

During that period, Hendrick’s Gin says it will be recognising the true value of the cucumber by transforming the fruit into exchangeable monetary units, to retrieve a Hendrick’s Gin & Tonic, in celebration of World Cucumber Day on June 14th.

The bars in question will accept bona fide cucumbers of any species as currency – or “bar tender” – in exchange for a G and T during a dedicated ‘Cucumber Hour’.

‘Cucumber Hour’ will run from 5pm to 8pm and participating outlets include Karel T-Lounge, J’s Fresh Bar & Kitchen Westlands and Karen, Que pasa Karen, Villa Rosa Kempinski, Muthaiga Country Club, Picazzo Restaurant, The Lord Erroll and Nyama Mama Delta.
