Kenya Sevens Win the Shield After an Incoherent Weekend

Team Kenya beat Japan 26-7 on Sunday to take the Shield Category in this past weekend’s Hong Kong Sevens tournament. But it was with a disastrous weekend behind them that the incoherent Shujaa players snatched the win.

The win against Japan was one of the team’s total two in the entire tournament. Before Sunday’s game, Team Kenya lost 21-14 to USA on Friday, 17-7 to England on Saturday and 19-12 to Wales, also on Saturday.

After three loses, Team Kenya was demoted to the bowl, where they lost 21-10 to Canada. Demoted one step further to the Shield, Shujaa beat Portugal with 21-0 in the semifinal before beating Japan in the final.

The game against Japan was an unsettling 7-7 at break. Back from the break, Leonard Mugaisi scored one and Billy Odhiambo two tries, closing out the match with a sigh of relief.

The Kenya Sevens rugby team are now, together with Canada, on a split 13th place in the international rankings.
