The Importance of Wellness: Embracing the Four Pillars of Health & Wellbeing

Wellness and Wellbeing is about your quality of life.

Optimal wellness in a specific area means that you’re living your best life possible with regard to that aspect.

For example, if you have a high level of emotional wellness, you may notice that you’re able to stay calm when life spins out of control.

If you have greater worksite wellness, you likely derive a lot of happiness and satisfaction in your job.

Understanding why wellness matters is essential, as it signifies a state of thriving rather than merely surviving.

It encompasses our physical, emotional, mental, and soulful aspects, all harmoniously aligned to establish a solid foundation.

  1. Physical Wellbeing: Physical wellness refers to our ability to perform daily activities according to our preferences. It entails having ample energy to meet our highest standards in every aspect of life. This includes deep breathing, unrestricted movement, nourishing our bodies, embracing our desired level of sexual vitality, enjoying our physical form, obtaining quality sleep, engaging in sports, and enabling our bodies to function optimally in all its remarkable capacities.
  2. Mental Wellbeing: Mental wellness reflects our cognitive sharpness, mental clarity, creativity, thought comprehension, memory, stress management, ability to relax, self-confidence, and inner strength. It encompasses being mentally present, feeling empowered, and effectively dealing with the challenges that arise.
  3. Emotional Wellbeing: Emotional wellness entails our capability to navigate and process our emotions as they emerge. It involves responding to life authentically, experiencing and expressing love freely, honoring ourselves in each moment, cultivating self-assurance, feeling seen and heard, trusting our intuition, and fostering a sense of safety, peace, and contentment.
  4. Soulful Connection: Soulful connection encompasses our participation in something greater than ourselves, be it through community involvement, volunteering, relationships with friends and family, or religious affiliation. It involves caring about and adding value to others, finding purpose, feeling inspired to get out of bed in the morning, or experiencing joy during leisure time.

The Interconnectedness of Wellness thrives through the interplay of these four pillars, each reliant on the others to achieve a state of flow and completeness.

Like a house built on a sturdy foundation, the absence of one pillar can cause the entire structure of wellness to crumble.

Wellness emerges through our daily actions, behaviors, and repeated habits.

Attaining Wellness

As the saying goes, “If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got.”

Achieving true wellness necessitates assuming complete responsibility for our health, including the decisions we’ve made in the past and those we choose moving forward.

While change may be required, it is worthwhile. It might feel unfamiliar, but isn’t that what we desire?

Wellness Goes Beyond Fitness It is important to note that wellness surpasses mere fitness. We can be physically fit but lack overall health.

Running a marathon may be achievable, yet we may struggle with swimming or lifting weights. We might be capable of running 10 kilometers but simultaneously face issues such as back pain, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure. Wellness encompasses holistic health across all areas of our lives.

Often, we claim to be healthy, yet we experience conflicts within our emotions, lack a sense of purpose, or struggle to express love to ourselves and others.

Wellness embraces our entirety, allowing us to reach our fullest potential. As our natural state, achieving wellness can be far more enjoyable than we have been led to believe.
