Stella Mwangi Bossing Up With New EP

One of Kenya’s outstanding music exports, songwriter, performer, rapper and director STL Aka Stella Mwangi has been silent for a minute. Now she is back on the scene with some hot new material off the press.

The Kenyan-born artist who has since relocated to Norway has been keen to push out music that will be accepted locally and internationally. She has also used her abroad networks in the past to land some major collabos such as Mohombi on ‘Hoola Hoop’ and Diplo of Major Lazer on the jam Butter Theme Refix.

The Brand New EP Self-Titled ‘Stella Mwangi” is an amalgam of her Hip Hop finesse topped by the dynamism of electronic dance sound. She attributes this success of delivery to working with Norwegian producers Big City. The music on the EP sorts to appeal to English-speaking fans (abroad) but she also brings it home with some Swahili swag on the rap. Producers worked on the project with a mind frame of having the songs feature on film,Tv series and commercials in the future. It would be a good look if STL landed that.

There are 5 records on the project, listed as

  1. Big Girl
  2. Murda Dem
  3. Get Up and Go
  4. Set It Off
  5. Work

The Lead single Big Girl which is officially out is a good performance track. The current wave of music from Europe has huge gaps in between raps and the beat creates a party vibe. Big Girl should do well in clubs especially in the 254 and heavy Dj spins.

STL is proud that Big City is giving her the necessary push on this new project, “It means a lot to me that they really love my music and have chosen me to be their main artist to push for a couple of months”. I like the style of which you purchase the music on iTunes suggesting that artist income (especially from Kenya) can depend on Digital sales.

On the same note, Stella has been vocal about her Brand ‘Vaa Ki Afrika’ trying to push forward her African roots in Europe. This is a brand inspired by traditional colors and patterns with a Scandinavian twist to it. The tagline calling everyone out “Dress like an African” seems to be working for her well.
