Sauti Sol’s Bien on Starting New Label: ‘Did It From Our Savings’

Sauti Sol recently unveiled their new –rather much anticipated– record label Sol Generations.

BenSoul, who released “Lucy” as his debut single, was the first artist to be signed under the label followed by Crystal Asige, Kaskazini (a trio that includes singers Chris, Ywaya and Israel) and Nviiri.

The five new signees debuted with “Extravaganza”, which immediately took over the airwaves and skyrocketed on YouTube( currently has 1.2 million views).

Everything fell in place exactly the way the band envisioned it a little more than a year ago.

“It has been a project from our savings all the years and it is something that requires a lot of time because we have to analyse every artiste before signing them,” Bien said in an interview with The Star.

“I have gone for their shows for over one year and even watched them perform live.”

Sol Generation has been marred with some controversy of its own, especially after comedian cum radio presenter Jalang’o’s outburst on social media.

Jalas claimed that while Sauti Sol have made tremendous effort in pushing and growing their own brand internationally, they have done almost nothing when it comes to uplifting local artists and showing them how to grow their own brands.

Bien, explained that they had their eyes on the ball long ago, and that meant taking a different route that many fellow entertainers are not accustomed to.

“We knew what we wanted as a group and have our financial projections,” Bien said.

“We even went to school for this so we get the best direction on how to run a record label. To our haters, time will tell, as we are still coming up with bigger projects.”
