Kenyan music stars were shinning bright yesterday at the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA). The Awards that seek to award exemplary African music talent took place at Eko Convention Center in Lagos. Out of the 14 Kenyans who were nominated for AFRIMA 2021, Nikita Kering, Shanah Manjeru, Sauti Sol, and RASH Band won.
The Better Than Ever Hitmaker was the most nominated Kenyan in AFRIMA 2021. She got 3 nominations i.e. Best Female Artiste in Eastern Africa, Songwriter of the Year, and Best Artist, Duo or Group in African RnB & Soul, for her hit, Ex. The sultry-voiced singer won the Best Artist RnB and Soul and Best Female Artiste East Africa awards
The multi-talented singer won the Best African Female Artist in Inspirational Music Award. This was courtesy of her song God Will Make A Way. Shanah is now holding the record of the youngest AFRIMA winner at 13 years old. This record previously belonged to Nikita Kering who scooped 2 AFRIMAs in 2019 at the age of 17 years.
Kenya’s favorite Boy Band Sauti Sol won the Best African Band Award. The Suzanna hitmakers tied with Bensoul and Xeniah Mannaseh as the 2nd most nominated Kenyans with 2 nominations, as they had also been nominated in the Best Male Artist in Eastern Africa category.
Swahili Rock Band RASH won the Best Group in African Rock Award yet again courtesy of their song Structures. The band that had won this award in 2019, is comprised of 5 members i.e. Maximiliano Filardi, Samuel Warui, Samuel Gakungu, Colbert Akunga, and Evans Mutanduki.
The popular 4 member Jazz music band that consists of Danson Rabuka, Eric Kimaru, Peter Kingori, and Denilson Babu, won the Best Group in African Jazz. This was courtesy of their song Dance.
