Kenyan designer Ali Abdi AKA Nairobi West Niccur, has shot down claims a pair of Nike Air Jordan shoes he gifted Raila Odinga is fake.
The ODM leader attended a talk at Nairobi University on Tuesday donning the Air Jordans Off Whites Complex “AF100” impressing many younglings in the process.
However, several Kenyans were quick to call out Nairobi West Niccur claiming he gifted Raila a fake pair.
Niccur, who owns a popular boutique and dresses several popular celebrities such as Babu Owino, Khaligraph Jones Otile Brown among others, however, denied the allegations saying the shoes are original and were specifically shipped from abroad for Baba.
“I made a special order for him and delivered. The shoes are Nike Air Jordan 1 x off white. That is not fake,” he said.
The designer further said that he didn’t know the shoes were for Raila though since the order was done by an ODM member who has been his customer.
“One day he ordered sneakers that were not his size. He told me to deliver them at their home,” he said.
“When I got there I was scared, he said he wants me to meet someone special; all over sudden I saw Raila Odinga. We gave him the sneakers and hoodies.”
The “AF100” model was released by Nike when they celebrated the 35th anniversary of Bruce Kilgore’s iconic Air Force 1 model. It was designed by Virgil Abloh, a well-known fashion designer based in America.
Niccu also dispelled rumors that the shoe cost Ksh 100,000 as many have been led to believe online. Raila’s pair cost him Ksh 11,000.
People are now familiar with his brand and shop, Thrift Trendy, but according to Nairobi West Niccur, it has been there since 2019.
“I started by hawking clothes and shoes in the streets of Nairobi then I moved to selling them online. I opened my shop at Imenti House in 2019,” he said.
