Kenya’s first-ever political thriller series County 49, is premiering on 25 August 2022 on Showmax. The storyline of County 49 is about the political ups and downs of the fictional Bwatele County, Kenya’s 49th county.
In spite of the county’s riches, County 49 citizens suffer due to the high cost of living and scarce resources. Subsequently, against the backdrop of great civilian discontent, a disgraced security officer is compelled to save the new governor and her chief of staff – his estranged wife from a local terrorist group.
County 49’s cast features some of Kenya’s top film talent. They include Wakio Mzenge (Selina), Nyokabi Macharia (Country Queen), Ainea Ojiambo (Igiza), Maqbul Mohammed (Crime and Justice), Martin Githinji (Sue na Jonnie), Peter Kawa (Uradi), Benson Ojuwa (Njoro Wa Uba), Nick Kwach (Chaguo), Emmanuel Mugo (Igiza), Angela Mwandanda, and Sam Psenjen (County Queen) among others.
County 49 is a Kibanda Pictures production. Its crew comprises Supa Modo and Crime and Justice director Likarion Wainaina. Additionally, other top crew members include producer Millicent Ogutu, and Morning After, Country Queen co-director Brian Munene and actor-producer Bruce Makau. Brian is also the show’s writer, alongside Voline Ogutu (Crime and Justice), Mercy Mutisya (Click Click Bang, Too Early for Birds), and Martin Kigondu. Veteran thespian John Sibi-Okumu is the story consultant.
County 49 is the 5th Showmax Original title in Kenya. It follows the police procedural and legal drama Crime and Justice S1 and S2, the coming-of-age film Baba Twins, the drama series Single Kiasi and the thriller series Igiza. It is part of Showmax’s commitment to invest in the film and TV industry in Kenya.
