Omwela Re-elected As Kenya Rugby Chairman

Richard Omwela was on Wednesday Mar 22, 2017 re-elected as the Kenya Rugby Union for another term till 2019.

Omwela garned 25 votes against Sasha Mutai’s 23 while former director Pape Sembi had only nine to come third.

In his campaign pledge, Omwela had said he wanted a return to complete what he had started which was house clean, woo sponsorship back to the union, improve on performance of Kenya Simbas and get the side to the 2019 World Cup as well as reinvent Safari Sevens for a new uptake by fans who have since distanced away from the annual tournament.

As Mango went out, Sylvia Kamau from Strathmore – who missed out a seat in 2015, Kabras chair Ray Olendo and Harlequins Treasurer Ezekiel Owuor were voted in as directors to take up slots vacated by Mango, Paula Lanco and Sembi, the last two having served two straight terms and were not legible for re-election.

The four, alongside Omwela, had all been fronted by the Kenya Cup caucus.

Kamau, who hails from Strathmore Leos, got 46 points, Ian Mugambi returned with 38 one ahead of Ray Olendo while Owuor had  33.

Oscar Mango, who served as the director of national squads and elite performance, got 23 which was not enough to see him back while Bonfas Salano and Hillary Itela got 21 and 20 respectively.

In the AGM, three clubs Menengai Oilers, Kiambu RFC and Masaku RFC were accepted as the new Kenya Rugby Union affiliates after getting the nod from the members.

The members also adopted a motion sponsored by Nondescripts to increase office term from the current two years to four beginning 2019.

Clause 10.4 of the Kenya Rugby Union constitution will also be deleted and replaced with a new one on the eligibility of candidates for board positions.

The new clause 10.4 will in part read; for a candidate to be nominated for election as a Board Member, such a candidate must have served in either the executive committee of an Affiliate of KRU or on the technical committee of such Affiliate or an accredited coach, referee or administrator or medical practitioner of the game of Rugby Union for a period of at least four years.
