Kenya’s Angella Okutoyi has climbed the World Tennis Tour (WTA) ranking after a series of impressive performances.
She recorded her highest-ever ranking after climbing 182 slots to reach her current position of 1145.
During the W15 ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour held at the Karen Country Club Okutoyi and her Indian partner, Bhasin Smriti took home the Doubles title.
This is on the back of another victory in July of this year which saw the 18-year-old become the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam event.
“It’s great for me to be the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam and reach a final in a Grand Slam. I’m now able to inspire more players from Kenya and Africa,” Okutoyi stated.
The young Tennis star also made history by becoming the first Kenyan to compete in an Australian Open.
She also managed historic wins in other Grand Slam tournaments she has competed in, including the French Open, US Open, and Wimbledon.
Despite her humble beginning Okutoyi has managed to make a name for herself and continues to carry the Kenyan Flag in the sport for future talents as well.
“Nothing is impossible, I have reached here and they can also make it. They just need to be determined and trust the people around them, be focused, and do what’s right,” Okutoyi stated.
