“Not A Bot”: X Formerly Twitter Set To Have New Users Pay To Access The Platform

If you are considering joining X, formerly Twitter, the platform has revealed new users in select countries will be charged. 

The platform released a statement stating that in its attempt to reduce spam, it has introduced the ‘Not A Bot’ Program where users will need to verify their phone numbers and select a subscription plan that comes with a charge.

“As of October 17th, 2023, we’ve started testing “Not A Bot”, a new subscription method for new users in two countries.

This new test was developed to bolster our already significant efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity.” Read the statement.

New accounts created on the Web in New Zealand and the Philippines will first be required to verify their phone number.

They will also need to select a subscription plan that comes with a charge.

The charge, $1 USD Annual Fee.

Other plans are X Premium and verified organizations.

Users will be able to perform certain actions on the web version of the platform: post content, Like posts, Reply, Repost and Quote other accounts’ posts, Bookmark posts.

New users who opt out of subscribing will only be able to take “read only” actions, such as read posts, watch videos, and follow accounts.

Existing users are however not affected by the program.

Combatting bots and spammers on X

Since Elon Musk X’s takeover, one of his objectives has been to get rid of bot accounts, and the new program is a continuation of it.

“This will evaluate a potentially powerful measure to help us combat bots and spammers on X while balancing platform accessibility with the small fee amount.” Revealed X.
