What does it mean to be female and African? What are the challenges we go through, and how can we punch through them?
There are nine Kenyan women on the list for this year’s New African Woman Awards – that seek to honor women blazing trails in their community.
This list includes Hollywood A Lister Lupita Nyongo, PR Maven Gina Din Kariuki, CEO of Keroche Breweries Tabitha Karanja and 5000-meter champion Vivian Cheruiyot – all women excelling at the very top of the field, and who are receiving international recognition and challenging the glass ceiling.
Others who have made the grade are the sporting ambassador Tegla Loroupe, activist Vivian Onano, CEO of Kenya Women Holding Jennifer Riria, Stella Kilonzo of African Development Bank and Founder of The Web Tekies Anne Wanjuhi Njoroge.
The awards are a way of showing appreciation to the women, who are successful in Africa, women who are promoting peace in conflict-inflicted areas and contributing to the increased resources and productivity in their nations.

The Awards come courtesy of the African Women Association whose main focus is changing the perception of what it means to be African and show African women exactly what is possible within their own environments.
