Lovers of spicy and authentic Mexican cuisine can finally stop pining away, following the opening of The Burrito Bar – a new restaurant along Valley Road that promises to bring on the flavor.
I spoke to Faiza Hersi – one of the proprietors, as to why Mexican food in particular and the type of customers she is hoping the new spot will attract: “Nairobi has a shortage of authentic Mexican restaurants. We decided to try it out because majority of the ingredients used are easily available in kenya. We all eat rice, beans, avocados, kachumbari, chilli, beef, chicken etc. Burrito Bar just brings all these ingredients together…” She says that with the focus on fresh ingredients that are healthy, she wants to cater to clients of all ages who are looking for an alternative to the fast food they are normally used to consuming.
I love that their menu doesn’t slap you with fifty thousand options – I feel that the fewer choices I have to make, the better. It also means that the chefs on duty take greater care to deliver quality meals every single time.
Naturally, with our fondness for chicken in Kenya, the burritos – and in particular, the pulled chicken burrito has been the most popular item on the menu so far.
Faiza says that she’s hoping the market in Nairobi is ready and will support the idea of this authentic style of food and from there, decisions will be made as to growth: “ …if it picks up we hope to open at another venue in the future….”
But there is confidence that this will happen – Nairobi is considered a growing gastronomical city – and one that has over the past few years seen a veritable bubbling over of new restaurants: “Nairobians are open to embracing new cultures and especially if they are true to the original way of preparing food. The love for new flavours is embraced well…”
It’s definitely a spot worth checking out.
