The rapper Khaligraph has had a pretty impactful 2017 so far – so perhaps it’s no surprise that the music download and curate site Mdundo has named it in its list of the region’s top musicians.
Music collective The Kansoul and Darassa also round up three of the biggest names in East Africa – put down to a proliferation of hits as well as column inches: they have had people talking about them.
Mdundo tags The Kansoul’s Bablas and No woman No Party as the group’s biggest tunes out right now, adding that they have also gained a lot of traction in neigh outing Uganda.
Khaligraph is currently still riding high according to Toa Tint, Mazishi and Micasa Sucasa featuring rapper Cashy. Toa Tint, of course, being a reaction to rumors of skin bleaching. And according to Mdundo, he’s set to continue at the top for the next few months.
Tanzania’s Darassa is also competing with the two Kenyan acts at the top of the Mdundo charts with tunes such as Hasara Roho, Weka Ngoma and Muziki featuring Ben Pol.
The Tanzanian star has maintained his position in the top 10 weekly chart since last year after releasing Muziki and maintained his overall number one position on the charts for weeks now.
Topping up the Top 10 on hip hop include Kaka Empire’s femcee Femi One with her Tippy Toe collabo with Kristoff and Kenya’s upcoming artist Rhymaholic with his jam Give Me Some Air.
That said, the list is down to considerable debate: how do you count out the current artist of the moment – Nyashinski – who recently released not just one, but two bangers over the past month alone?
