The Black Panther actress will be producer of this film and is clearly thrilled to be part of this project. Late last year, Lupita participated in the Netflix’s Bookmarks, a live-action series that features prominent Black celebrities and artists reading children’s books from Black authors, that highlight the Black experience, where she read her book Sulwe.
The book which is about colorism and self-esteem was originally written in English in 2019 and translated to Swahili and Dholuo last year. It is a fiction picture book for children which tells a story of a young Kenyan girl called Sulwe, who yearns for her dark skin to be lighter until one night she is visited by a shooting star, that opens her eyes and changes her perspective.
Lupita has continued to be an inspiration to many women of colour through her achievements and activism for black people. Her impressive track record boasts of coveted accolades such as an Oscar, NAACP Image Awards and SAG Award just to mention a few.
We can’t wait to watch this project.
