The Tony Award nominations are in and it’s looking good for Lupita.
“Eclipsed,” Lupita’s Broadway debut, earned a nod for best new play while Lupita herself was nominated for best actress for her lead role in the drama about women caught in the despair of the second Liberian civil war.
In response to her nomination, Lupita praised fellow cast members, stressing the political implications behind the play.
“Our hope is to awaken something in the consciousness of our audience to effect change around the world,” she said, according to the New York Daily News.
The Tony Awards will not be announced until June 12, at which point Lupita could add to her trophy case, which already includes an Oscar for her performance in Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave.”
