Kenyans Dazzle On The AMVCA 2023 Nominations List

Kenya is celebrating its highest number of nominations yet at the prestigious Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards AMVCA 2023, with a total of 17 nominations. AMVCA takes place annually in Lagos, Nigeria to spotlight exceptional talent in the African film industry.

Among the nominees are Kenyan Showmax Originals, which have been gaining momentum since their launch. Two of these nominations are for Best TV Series: Drama Series Single Kiasi and Political Thriller Series County 49. Also, County 49 star James Webbo, has a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Movie or TV Series.

On the Best Movie East Africa are Showmax’s Baba Twins, Phil it Productions’ Click Click Bang and Married to Work. Grace Wacuka, a leading character in Married To Work has a Best Actress In A Comedy/TV Series nomination.

Walter Odhiambo scooped a nomination in the Best Lighting Designer In Movie Or Tv Series category for his work on Shanty Town. The Best Indigenous Language Movie Or Tv Series: Swahili category has two Kenyan nominees; Phoebe Ruguru & Njue Kevin for Safari and Philip Karanja for Click Click Bang.  

Meanwhile, Maisha Magic titles Njoro Wa Uba, Salem, and Pete have been nominated for Best Original Comedy, Best Original Telenovela, and Best Original Drama Series, respectively. Finally, the Multichoice Talent Factory Films Cheza and Stinger have slots in the Best Multichoice Talent Film.

According to the AMVCA 2023 organizers, the nominees were selected by an esteemed panel. 14 categories will be open to public voting, while 21 categories are up to the panel of judges under that is the leadership of veteran film director, producer, and writer, Femi Odugbemi.

The winners will be crowned at a gala scheduled to take place on 20th May 2023. Voting is now open and will close on 11th May 2023. Vote for your favorite nominee on the official AMVCA website.
