Kenyan Teens Strutting the Global Fashion Industry

A new group of homegrown stunners have emerged as the faces to watch, whether for their crossover appeal or their powerful beauty standards. Meet our favourites – and trust! These girls you’ll be seeing everywhere for years to come.

Let’s start this off by acknowledging the all so beautiful and gorgeous 19-year-old, Halima Aden. This budding fashion star wowed social media when images of her ‘kinda’ broke the internet. The beauty first walked in Kanye West’s highly anticipated Yeezy Season 5 show, challenging stereotype on and off the runway. “I didn’t really have modelling in mind. I wanted to spread a positive message about beauty and diversity to show other young Muslim Hijabi women that there is room for them”, she said during her first huge interview with Vogue magazine.

Fast forward to 2017, Halima has been featured in a print editorial for CR Fashion Book, the brainchild of former Vogue Paris Editor Carine Roitfeld. She has done a photo shoot with world-class photographer, Mario Sorrenti. She is currently signed to IMG Models, a model agency with household names such as Bella and Gigi Hadid, Chrissy Teigen and Gisele.

In a business that often prioritizes conformity, Aden has found a way to respect both her values and her desire for creative expression. And that my friend, is a boss move!

Imari Karanja

I am a sucker for newcomers and people who work extremely hard to achieve their dreams; so best believe Imari Karanja has got me hooked. After a string of numerous auditions, 15-year-old Imani got signed by Metropolitan Modelling Agency in Paris. Imari ended up getting her first walk on the runway at the 2017 New York Fall Fashion Week. From there her star begun to rise especially after walking for Prada, Marc Jacobs and Dior as her first shows. That’s a huge deal in the fashion industry.

Though still a student, Imari walked for Loewe Giambattista, Valli and Hermes at this year’s Paris Fashion Week. She is set to do her first show as a full-time model at the New York Spring Fashion Week 2018.

Elisa Libertad Angerer, where at thou? This Austria based, Kenyan born model was signed to InVougue Modelling Agency a few years back at the tender age of 16 years, as a commercial model. She was featured in a few commercials, I do wish we saw a lot more from her. Fast forward to 2017; Elisa is now a fashion designer, owner of Angerer Collection, a visionary artist, and a singer.

Nicole Atieno Oyende

Ok! Allow me to dub Nicole Atieno Oyende as ‘Kenya’s very own Naomi Campbell’- She’s killing it! Nicole first graced the runway two years ago at the tender age of 17 making her debut at the Gucci fashion show during Milan Fashion week.

Nicole is taking over the industry. She is signed to almost all the leading agencies in Europe and North America. Let me just list them down.

  • Supreme Management (Paris)
  • Wilhelmina (London and NewYork)
  • Woman Management (Milan)
  • Uno Models (Barcelona)
  • IMM Bruxelles (Brussels)

Nicole has graced the cover of Harpers Bazaar, Kazakhstan. She has also had an editorial fashion spread for Vogue Japan, as well as Bon Magazine. She also dawned in the latest Issey Miyake Collection Campaign for Tush Magazine.

They say three times a charm but when a designer handpicks you for the fourth time… You beyond lucky! This year, she strutted for two shows for Gucci; pre-fall 2017 and Fashion week 2017 show. Nicole has also walked for Zac Posen… Tiny girl, doing big things.

Bigger things are definitely coming for these young girls. Salute to all the parents who identify their children’s talents and special qualities early and encourage them to be the best at what they do.
