Kenyan Speed Skaters Prove their Skills

Skating isn’t perhaps the sport most closely associated with Kenya – but it may surprise you to note that skaters from the 254 are angling for international acknowledgement – and are working hard to get there!

Skating requires stamina, balance and skill. But speed skating against a tough, seasoned group of competitors demands for even more.

The 2016 Speed Skating challenge has crowned a winner – Isaac Mburu came out on top, having put up a brave final push to beat a strong field that comprised of members of the Kenya Speed skating team who pushed for the top prize to the last roll.

The Skates marathon was organized by Michezo Afrika  in partnership with the Magharibi Michezo Awards and Kenya Skating clubs and sent Mburu rolling with 30,000 shillings in his bag.

This was a first for Team Kenya – the first 42KM marathon Road Race that culminated in Bungoma and Mburu was doubled over in excitement about his win: “My friends pushed me hard but I must admit the 42KM stretch needs a lot of endurance and preparation. We had a good race, the roads were good and we thank Organizers for the amazing experience and hope next year we can make it even bigger and more challenging.”

Second place went to last year’s champion – Peter Kamau while Samuel Irungu cam in third place. Lucy Achieng won the women open category with Tabitha Mumbi coming in second while Sally Mango was third.

And the plans for next year’s edition? Bigger and bolder, says the Kenya Federation of Roller Skating. Lameck Wafula, the federation’s head, says: “we would like to see more clubs being formed across the country and the more we take this sport to the people at the grassroots the more we keep growing it.
