Kenyan Representation Shrinks in AMVCA 2024 Nomination Lineup

The much-anticipated nomination list for the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards AMVCA 2024 is finally out. This follows an open call for submissions that ran from January 15th to February 14th. As the 10th edition of this esteemed pan-African film awards, the AMVCA continues to uphold its mission of celebrating excellence in African film and television.

AMVCA 2024 nomination roster comprises 27 categories. These include 16 non-voting and 9 audience voting categories, along with 2 recognition awards – the Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer Awards. The selection process for the non-voting categories is overseen by the AMVCA panel of judges, led by filmmaker Femi Odugbemi. Dr. Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and Channels, West Africa, MultiChoice, expressed admiration for the exceptional quality of entries received, highlighting the diversity and creativity prevalent in African cinema and television.

AMVCA 2024 Kenyan Nominees

While Kenya made history last year with a record-breaking 17 nominations, this year sees a notable decline in numbers. Only 6 nominations and 4 Kenyan titles have made the cut. Tosh Gitonga’s Music Drama, “Volume,” leads the pack with 3 nominations in the categories of Best Scripted Series, Best Writing, and Best Editing.

Additionally, the short film “Where the River Divides” has earned a nomination in the Best Indigenous Language Film (East Africa) category. Lastly, feature films “Itifaki” and “Ormoilaa Ogol (The Strong One)” also secured nominations in the same category.

Despite the reduced representation in the nomination slots, there remains optimism for Kenyan contenders to clinch victories at the forthcoming award gala scheduled for May 10th and 11th, 2024. The event will be broadcast live across all Africa Magic Channels on DStv and GOtv.

Fans eager to support their favorite nominees can cast their votes via the official AMVCA website before the deadline on April 28th, 2024.
