Kenyan Film ‘SupaModo’ To Premiere At The Berlin Film Festival

28 December of 2017 by

A project by a group of Kenyan Creatives has been chosen to fill a spot at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival.

Supa Modo‘ is a dramatic piece by Kenyan director Likarion Wainaina, co-produced by Tom Tykwer, tells the inspiring story of nine-year-old Jo played by Stycie Waweru who takes on the role of a terminally ill girl who dreams of being a superhero.

Against all odds and battling the time left her, a whole village takes it upon themselves to make Jo’s last wish a reality: to make a film and star in it….’

And here we are, from an idea presented by @likarionwainaina at a workshop, then months of writing, and one month of arduous shooting in Limuru, #SupaModo has been selected for a worldwide premiere at the 2018 Berlin Film Festival in the ‘Generations’ category. I’m so proud of everyone. We threw love into this— and lots of other substances of passion. Here’s to more. And shoutout to my fellow writers @akilinanywele @silasmiami and @wandungukamau and our mentors Natja and Ian Masters. The official press release reads: “This drama by Kenyan director Likarion Wainaina, co-produced by Tom Tykwer, tells the inspiring story of nine-year-old Jo. In her acting debut, Stycie Waweru embodies with touching earnestness the terminally ill girl who dreams of being a superhero. Against all odds and battling the time left her, a whole village takes it upon themselves to make Jo’s last wish a reality: to make a film and star in it. Wainaina succeeds in creating a deeply moving observation of the comforting value of imagination in the face of the finiteness of a still young life.”
