Kenyan Comedian Chipukeezy Attends BET Awards

The BET Awards happened on Sunday night at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and none other than Kenyan comedian Chipukeezy was in attendance. Via his Instagram account, he posted up pictures and videos of some of the performances, namely Future, Kendrick Lamar and DJ Khaled when he performed “I’m The One”, which features Chance the Rapper, Future, Quavo, Lil Wayne and Justin Bieber.

Chipukeezy also posted a video with Tanzania’s Rayvanny who won the Viewer’s Choice for Best International New Act. Rayvanny was the only East African nominated this year.

BET Awards 2017 came with some surprises. News leaked that Nasty C had won the Best International Act Africa where he had been nominated with Wizkid, AKA, Babes Wodumo, Davido, Tekno, Mr. Eazi and Stonebowoy. BET later confirmed that it was a system error and the award ended up going to Wizkid. Rightfully so because Wizkid has been working hard to ensure that he infiltrates the American market. He’s worked on a few collaborations with Chris Brown, Ty Dolla $ign and he recently announced that he had made music with Future. Nasty C however has been in the States catching interviews on major hip hop shows such as Sway in the Morning and Vlad TV. He also visited the XXL offices and Jay Z’s childhood neighborhood.

Nicki Minaj has been taking home the award for Best Female Hip Hop artist for the past 7 years but that was broken on Sunday when Remy Ma scooped the award! “Y’all b**hes got fat while we starved/Shots in your a**, pads in your bras, y’all some liars it ain’t no facts in your songs/And yeah, that crown is coming back to the Bronx,” Remy rapped as she accepted the awards. Shots obviously aimed at Nicki Minaj with whom she has been beefing with for the past decade. We want to believe that the BET Awards are genuine but one cannot help but wonder if this was a ploy to further the beef.

Obvious wins for the night were Kendrick Lamar, with Best Male Hip Hop. An obviously absent Beyonce who allegedly just had her twins was the big win for the night with 5 awards out of her leading seven including Best Female RnB/Pop artist and Album of the Year (Lemonade). Taraji P. Henson popularly known as “Cookie” for her role on Empire took home the award for Best Actress.
