Katungulu Mwendwa is One of Africa’s Best Designers

Widely acclaimed fashion designer and Nairobi-native Katungulu Mwendwa has been listed as one of Africa’s ten most prominent designers to look out for in 2015.

The list was published by Nigerian lifestyle magazine Genevieve and contained other familiar names like South African fashion designer Rich Mnisi and Ugandan stylist Gloria Wavamunno. Franklin Saiyalel, one of Kenya’s leading fashion bloggers, carefully compiled the list together with three other major players in the African fashion community.

“She is aware that as Kenya and other African countries continue to embrace Western culture, we may lose our African heritage,” read Katungulu’s listing. “She hopes that by referencing African culture in contemporized designs, she may build popularity and awareness for them and in doing so, safeguard their longevity.”

Katungulu has been one of the leading forces behind the growth of the African fashion scene and she has been showcasing her work in fashion capitols worldwide. Most recently, Katungulu’s eclectic pieces adorned the runway at New York Fashion Week.
