Kati Kati, Zilizala Win At The 2017 AMVCAs

05 March of 2017 by

The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) were held this weekend in Lagos, Nigeria – and it was primarily a West African affair, with numerous winners from that side of the continent taking home gongs.

This isn’t particularly surprising – but it’s always good to celebrate a Kenyan success story. And Kati Kati’s flame continues to shine brighter than ever, following on from its premiere in Kenya just over a month ago.

It won in the category of Best East African film. It wasn’t the only Kenyan film to receive a nomination though. It was up there with “Mganga Bomba”.

Elsaphan Njora was nominated for best supporting actor in a drama movie (Kati Kati). Dorothy Ghettuba, Victor Gatonye and Daudi Otieno were also nominated for best indigenous language movie or TV series- Swahili in Urembo, Fihi and Zilizala respectively.

The AMVCA bills itself as the biggest celebration of film and television talent across Africa. It held its first edition in 2013.

Those who took to the stage during the Gala event included Timi Dakolo and leading African songstresses Waje and Lira. Also performing at the AMVCAs was the winner of the first edition of The Voice Nigeria A’rese alongside Chike and the newly signed Mavin Records acts, the DNA twins.
