The Africa Movie Academy Awards was established in 2005 by Nigerian filmmaker Peace Anyiam-Osigwe. It celebrates exceptional contributions to African cinema. These awards represent one of the most prestigious events in the African film industry, recognizing and honoring excellence in various aspects of filmmaking.

In the compelling film Shimoni, Justin Mirichii takes on the role of Geoffrey. A former schoolteacher who faces the daunting challenge of reintegrating into a society that is far from forgiving, following his release from prison. As the movie unfolds, it delves into Geoffrey’s personal struggles, forcing him to confront the demons of his past while striving to gain acceptance among his fellow villagers.

Shot against the backdrop of rural Kenya, Shimoni fearlessly addresses critical societal issues, including sexual abuse and trauma. Produced by Angela Wanjiku Wamai, the film made waves on the international stage, premiering at prestigious film festivals. These include the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the African Film Festival (AFI).

While this nomination marks a significant achievement in Justin Mirichii’s career, it is worth noting that he is no stranger to the world of film. Mirichii boasts an impressive filmography, with roles in several high-profile Kenyan productions. Some of these are “Disconnect,” “Plan B,” “Mission to Rescue,” and “Watu Wote,” among others. Throughout his career, he has consistently showcased his versatility, professionalism, and exceptional talent.

Justin Mirichii’s selection as the sole Kenyan on the coveted AMAA shortlist is a source of pride for the Kenyan film industry and a testament to the country’s growing influence on the continental stage.

The culmination of this prestigious event will be the grand AMAA gala scheduled for October 29, 2023. Winners will be crowned, and the African film industry will come together once again to celebrate the remarkable talent that continues to shape the continent’s cinematic landscape.
