On a warm March Nairobi evening, the ever eclectic Kenyan collective Just a Band released their first book entitled Just a Book at the Goethe-Institut.
The book gives readers unprecedented access into the band’s process, projects and their practice. Readers, for example, can get a glimpse into the creative process behind the iconic Ha-he music video; from the origins of the Makmende character, to the various cultural references the group infused to create a hilariously entertaining and relatable music video for the Kenyan youth.
It also includes a lovely surprise for all the Just a Band enthusiasts out there; a CD with previously unreleased music.
At the launch, attendees took turns sitting in on a silent video exhibition at the back of the large room as the DJ’s for the night Mbithi Masya and Blinky Bill entertained the rest of the Nairobi crowd.
The video art exhibition is entitled PERSPECTIVE, and it is the group’s third and latest video art exhibition. It showcases various stories told through the first person narrative, which allows the audience to live through the minds and emotions of a set of characters dealing with both real and surreal situations.
It is definitely worth checking it out when you get a chance. PERSPECTIVE is showing at the Goethe-Institut from 14 March to 8 April 2016, Monday to Friday at 1- 6pm.
Just a Book is part of the Contact Zones NRB art series. Find out more about the series here.
