Journalist Sharon Barang’a Joins CGTN

Award-winning broadcast journalist Sharon Barang’a announced that she had joined China state broadcaster, China Global Television Network (CGTN), on Wednesday, July 5.

Despite the announcement, she did not disclose the details of her new role with the Chinese state-owned media.

“This week, I started a new chapter in my career. I appreciate everyone who has been following up on my journey, cheering me up, and praying for me,” Barang’a said in a statement.

CGTN has been known to employ some of the most talented Kenyan journalists in the industry over the years to promote a cultural connection between Africa and China.

Previously, Barang’a worked at Nation Media Group for eight years before leaving in 2020 and then joining TV47. She gained recognition as an education journalist tasked with reporting on health and children.

She recently quit TV47 after three years, Thursday, June 29, in a very emotional farwell.

“It is an emotional day leaving a company that received me warmly when I was going through a rough patch in my life,” she stated in her farewell speech.

Barang’a also worked as an editor at Ukweli Video Productions and as a scriptwriter at the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology.

She joined the Mandela Washington Fellowship program, funded by the U.S. Department of State in 2017.
