While many people might have claimed they are behind Sauti Sol’s career start, the band believes only John Katana of the Them Mushroom band really made them record their first song.
Katana helped the band launch their music journey and the birth of “Lazizi”.
According to the band, it’s true many people asked them to work on their music career and hit the studio but only Katana took them to a studio and made sure they recorded something.
“When people say they discovered Sauti Sol, they are all lying. John Katana from Them Mushrooms discovered Sauti Sol,” they said.
“He was the first person to take us to studio and encourage us to sing our own song, and ‘Lazizi’ was born.”
Bien further said that what they are doing now as a band is more or less a continuation of Them Mushroom band.
“Sauti Sol is a ‘Them Mushroom’s Legacy’ and their legacy lives beyond them,” he said.
Them Mushrooms is a musical band from the coast, playing mostly Chakacha, some Benga and also some reggae. They are most famous for the Swahili 1982 song “Jambo Bwana”.
