James Mwangi, Equity Bank CEO, named Forbes Africa Person of the Year for 2012

Dr James Mwangi, Equity Bank’s chief executive officer, has been named the 2012 Forbes Africa Person of the Year by Forbes Africa magazine.

Dr Mwangi beat four other nominees during a ceremony held last night in Lagos, Nigeria, crowning a year that has come full of recognitions.

Dr Mwangi was honored for playing a central role in making Equity Bank the largest bank in East and Central Africa, with more than seven million accounts in Kenya alone. He has also played a crucial role in ensuring banking services, including loans, are available to low income people who previously have in the past been left out of banking services.

Other nominees included¬† Aliko Dangote (Africa’s richest man), Joyce Banda (Malawai’s President), Tony Elumelu and Stephen Saad.

Dr Mwangi has won numerous international awards, including the 2012 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and 2012 Africa’s Innovation Leader of the Year.
