Jacob Asiyo Launches New Album In #SafaricomJazzFest Build Up

Jacob Asiyo is one of the country’s most highly acclaimed instrumentalists, and a recent album release at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi showed exactly why.

The marking of his new project dubbed “Apocryphal Tales” was also dubbed a Night of Jazz – an opportunity to mellow in the finesse of talented hands playing instruments that both demand as well as command attention.

A multifaceted entertainer, Jacob knows exactly how to ensure his audience doesn’t lose him – or vice versa. He’s been playing since before he was a teenager, and is known for his confidence and the natural way he engages with his music and allows it to respond to him.

Present at the launch event was his wife, the vocalist and TV personality Kavutha – known to most of us as ‘The Coach’.

However Asiyo and his multi talented wife didn’t hold down the fort themselves – they were also joined on board by the band Gogosimo, a group that prides itself on blending music from the coast, with the traditional tempos that usually define African rhythms coupled with western instrumentation to create a unique East African sound.

Jacob Asiyo wowed the crowds at the very first edition of the Safaricom International Jazz Fest in 2014. Watch part of that performance here:

Proceeds from that performance went towards the Ghetto Classics, an organization that works to teach young people from underprivileged backgrounds, music.

The album launch and indeed all things jazz this week work as the build up to the country’s biggest jazz spectacle, the Safaricom International Jazz Festival that’s set to be held at the Kasarani Grounds on Sunday the 26th of February.

Artists from around the globe will be converging at the venue to entertain and inspire jazz fans on what should hopefully be a bright and sunny afternoon. David Sanborn, world renowned saxophonist from the USA will be the headlining performer at the festival this year, with local artists Mwai and The Truth, Shamsi and The Nairobi Horns Project.
