The Inaugural HYPE Festival went down this past weekend. Nigerian- Ghanaian star Mr Eazi returned to Nairobi as the main act. The young star is the pioneer of Banku Music. He describes it as the mixture of “Ghanaian bounces, Ghanaian highlife, Nigerian chord progressions, and Nigerian patterns”.
The night seemed to be off to a slow start but it picked up once the performers took to the stage. Local acts hyped up the crowd. Tunji came up and got the crowd bumping to ‘Mat za Ronga’.
Petra, Otile Brown and Timmy T Dat all came up and warmed up the increasingly inebriated crowd.
Khaligraph Jones started off his set by bringing Tunji back on stage for the ‘Mat za Ronga’ Remix to my pure joy. I can’t get enough of that song.
And Prezzo jumped on stage to give some of us wazee some good old jamz to get hype to. I was losing my mind when he played ‘Let’s get down’…still a hit in 2018!
Mr Eazi came up and gave the fans a performance that will be talked about for a long time to come. He performed his hits Leg Over, Bankulize, Shoki & Dab, Pour Me Water and Hollup that have been on the charts for a hot minute.
