The Safaricom Jazz Lounge hosted , South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela at the Safaricom Jazz Lounge at Uhuru Gardens, Lang’ata on Friday last week.
Hugh Masekela’s solo career has spanned 5 decades, during which he has released over 40 albums (featured on countless more) and has worked with diverse artists such as Harry Belafonte, Dizzy Gillespie, The Byrds, Fela Kuti, Marvin Gaye, Herb Alpert, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and the late Miriam Makeba.
Two of the most prolific Kenya’s jazz bands, Mwai and The Truth, followed by Nairobi Horns Project, warmed up the stage for the maestro in the chilly evening.
Fans were in for a stunning performance when the jazz phenomenon and Grammy nominee took to the stage. Hugh Masekela performed some of his great songs like Grazing in the grass, Chileshe and of course Stimela/Coal Train.
Proceeds from all ticket sales from the show are to be donated to the Ghetto Classics music programme based in Korogocho.
