For the fitness enthusiasts, mark your schedule, 13th of May is the official day for the Karen Hospital Heart Run. This is a charity run which has been in existence for the last 25 years, officiated by the Heart To Heart Foundation- the Charity arm of Karen Hospital which raises funds for children with heart ailments from less privileged families.
The sporting event attracts a large crowd each year as they push the agenda of heart issues and raise money for the same. This year the event targets to raise Ksh50 million. A single operation is estimated to cost between Ksh350, 000 to 1 million hence making it out of reach for many families.
The foundation was set up by Dr. Betty Gikonyo and Dr. Dan Gikonyo who saw the dire need of saving children with heart conditions and preventable diseases. The long-term goal is to conduct heart transplants at the Karen Hospital. At the event, you also get to interact with professionals who give tips on staying healthy and keeping the preventable conditions at bay. The hospital has conducted hundreds of surgeries in the past and wants to grow its efficiency.
The founders will be appealing to the government to waive off tax on medical equipment as it would translate to more sophisticated machines that can save lives.
Heart to Heart Foundation director Mrs. Juliet Nyaga comments that the race has served as an important platform to raise awareness about heart ailments among children. “Providing early interventions to children with heart conditions is a guarantee of fulfilling life for them. While participants reach the finish line, a child is promised a start in life,” she commented.
