Fresh Stage Play “My Fish, My Choice” Opens Today

It’s unfortunate that theatre is not as pre-eminent as it used to be in the late 2000’s in Kenya – some of the country’s foremost acting talent began their careers (and continue to represent) on the stage – notable figures such as June Gachui, Nick Ndeda, Nice Githinji, Milicent Ogutu, Ian Mbugua, Patricia Kihoro and Charles Ouda – many of whom have also moved on to dabble in television and film.

Granted, the move towards the manner in which we consume has changed – but plays offer the kind of intimacy that television sometimes strives for and doesn’t manage to capture – the proximity to the stage allow actors and the audience alike the opportunity to engage with each other in a more intimate way – sometimes even ‘breaking the wall’.

Which is why I am excited about a new play that kicks off today. Dubbed “My Fish, My Choice”, it sells itself as a look at our country – in a way that only Kenyans can: both in depth as well as tongue in cheek.

It’s produced by Heartsrings Entertainment and will showcase the multiple ways fish can be used – whether it is by bringing disagreeing factions together or perhaps pitting friends against one another?

Fish is a symbol for the manner in which we all interact, and the production, directed by Sammy Mwangi will be on show from this evening at the Alliance Francaise auditorium until August 21 from 6.30 pm.

Homegrown entertainment at under 600 shillings – you really can’t go wrong with that. The best thing – you get a ticket free if you head down there for its opening night.

If you are planning a date or a night out with friends this week – consider ditching the bar or the club and spending less money on something that could have you laughing for days after.
