There’s a song in the movie Annie, (the original, and also the terrible remake with Jamie Foxx from 2014) that says, “You’re never fully dressed without a smile.” Clearly, even back then, they knew then that simply putting on a nice dress wasn’t enough. Nina Garcia, Creative Director of Marie Claire Magazine and Project Runway Judge is quoted as saying that accessories can make or break a look. Jewellery, handbags, sunglasses, scarves, hats, belts and just about anything you use to complement your outfit is an accessory, and these are the designers you need to keep an eye for this year. They’re changing things up!
I first came across her jewellery designs at the 2015 Tribal Chic and was in awe of those elaborate pieces showcased on the runway. The Adèle Dejak brand is heavily inspired by African shapes, textures and traditional techniques, notably in the material used for the creations: African-made fabric like kitenge (wax print), brass, aluminium, glass and bone. A quick scroll through her Instagram page leaves you lusting after everything from bags to necklaces, bracelets, rings and chokers.
“Passion made me do it,”she says on the page and I can’t wait to see what else she does in 2017.
Anthony Mulli, Head Designer behind Katchy Kollections described the brand in an interview with the Daily Nation as, “a fashion accessories brand that creates beautifully crafted and affordable pieces inspired by our rich cultural heritage.” Using beads as their main material, Katchy Kollections is on a mission to design an international wardrobe for today’s global woman. From Handbags to neck pieces, wristlets and their hand-crocheted plastic bags, adorned with signature beaded ornaments, inspired by the Maasai jewellery you’re bound to fall in love with them.
