Daddy Owen: I Was Called Soft For Opening Up About Depression

Gospel singer Daddy Owen has silently been fighting depression since November last year.

The 40-year-old has come out to share his fight with mental illness saying he has been fighting alone since the majority of his friends, family and even fans think depression is not real.

“Those I tried to explain to my problems to thought I was mad,” said the singer.

“Others told me to be a man. But in the long run, I had to dig the problem and face it.”

Daddy Owen, while speaking to Word Is, said that he has been depressed since 2019.

He however avoided touching rumors about separation from his wife that have filled social media for the better part of 2021, which, many believe is the sole reason why he’s depressed.

“I have to admit that so many things have changed in my life and so many things are yet to change,” he said.

“I do not want to speak about my marriage since there are children involved.”

Owen went on to add that he has been mocked by people after finally getting the courage to open up. He’s thankful however that his close family members and friends have been with him through the trying times.

“The problem is that I was in denial and I wasted a lot of time saying I would be okay as a man,” he said.

“Someone recently sent me a message saying, “‘Vile ulikua umedominate kwa industry! Kweli watu huisha.'”

“When you become hopeless, you even fear getting a psychiatrist since you do not trust anyone. That was a wrong move but I thank God I came out and I can now feel relieved.”
