As we wind up the month of June, we are still keeping tabs on what is hot and trendy in the city. Gengetone is still taking shape in the industry and its sub-genres are emerging every day. Here is what is hot this week in the Kenyan music scene.
Zimepanda – VDj Jones Feat Mbogi Genje
Mbogi Genje is the hottest group in the city right now. The crew has brought a new Sheng dialect in our conversations and we are all learning. Zimepanda is the hottest track on Dj mixes now as people try to figure what the lads are talking about. You will need a close ear and a translator for you to understand a fraction of this record. The young cats are immensely talented and their flow is natural. VDj jones is doing the Lords works in putting them on.
Mpenzi Mtazamaji – Ochungulo Family Feat Kansoul
After the monumental success of their previous hit ‘Na Iwake’ it is only right the two groups linked up once again for a second dub. The new record ‘Mpenzi Mtazamaji’ samples an old-school Kenyan benga fusion for the beat and the flow is so sick. The bars represent street swag and urban talk used in getting girls while subtly bragging. I like the groove and melodies laid on the track while Nelly The Goon delivers an easy-to-listen bridge for all.
Watu Wake – Naiboi
Naiboi is back in the scene with his first single for 2020. The Gospel infused jam is a somber look into what is going on in our world while encouraging us the God takes care of his own. The jam produced by Hamadi bears the live band elements and Afro-fusion sound making it stick from start to finish. Naiboi uses background vocals from his signed acts Band Beca. Check out the jam below.
Nakulove – King Kaka Feat Pascal Tokodi
As we wait on their joint album, King Kaka and Pascal Tokodi keep warming us up for the project. Their latest installation takes a Reggae route and a story of love. A Rastaman falls in love with a girl in his hood but the father does not approve. The two cats deliver superbly on the verses and chorus on the Reggae bass and strings bringing the track to a complete jam session. Check out the video below for the storyboard.
