Blinky Bill Drops 3rd Studio Album “We Cut Keys 2”

“We Cut Keys 2” marks the third studio project by Kenyan Producer/Artist and DJ Blinky Bill. With a career spanning over a decade, Blinky Bill has been a significant figure pushing the boundaries of music, both locally and globally.

The album, crafted mostly in Nairobi during the onset of the pandemic, maintains the exploratory and experimental nature of Blinky’s previous works. All this while embracing traditional tribal drum sounds, electronic music, hip-hop, and jazz. “We Cut Keys 2” hosts 16 tracks and is a testament to Blinky Bill’s ever-evolving sonic pallete.

Featuring an array of impressive collaborations, the album includes Ghanaian singer/rapper Fuse ODG, American singer/rapper GoldLink, Jamaica’s Shauna Fung Yee, and Kenya’s music legend Maji Maji, among others. The opening single, “Dracula,” is a compelling call for global unity and activism. The second single, “Get That Paper,” encapsulates Blinky Bill’s signature blend of funk, hip-hop, and jazz, with visuals that he considers the pinnacle of his visual career.

The “We Cut Keys 2” Journey

Blinky’s chance meeting with Fuse ODG in Ghana resulted in the vibrant party track “Constant K,” merging Afrobeats with Nairobi vibes. A collaboration with GoldLink, inspired by a serendipitous encounter in Nairobi, gave birth to the track “Compare.”

Six years in the making, the album was mixed by the legendary engineer Commissioner Gordon, known for his Grammy-winning work on iconic albums. The mastering was entrusted to Tony Dawsey, whose credits include Jay-Z’s ‘Black Album’ and Whitney Houston’s ‘My Love Is Your Love’.

“We Cut Keys 2” takes listeners on a sonic journey through diverse genres, each track showcasing Blinky Bill’s musical prowess. From the reflective “Black On the Keyboard” to the bass-heavy “Kiberit,” and the traditional Luo-inspired “Boss” featuring Kenya’s music legend Maji Maji, the album is a rich tapestry of sounds.

The bonus track “Jam Now, Simmer Down” reflects on life and celebrates the living and departed, while the outro, “Voice of Kenya,” pays homage to African horns and imagines their fusion with New Orleans sounds.

Additionally, His collaborative spirit has seen him work with notable artists globally, showcasing his versatility on renowned stages worldwide.
