2020 came with a lot of uncertainty for the music business. Many concerts were rescheduled to take place online and many others cancelled or postponed indefinitely. Despite the gloom and unpredictability that the COVID-19 pandemic brought, Kenyan music productions continued to thrive with many releases being collaborations. Below are our favourites as far as 2020 Kenyan music collaborations are concerned:
Utawezana –Femi One & Mejja
Utawezana was the highlight of the quarantine season. The jam which saw popular Tiktoker Azziad Nasenya rise to stardom currently boasts of over 10million views on YouTube. Mejja and Femi One should drop another banger together because this track was proof that each of them holds their own as far as bars are concerned. The song continues to bask in the glory of its success.
Black – Naiboi and Nyashinski
This collaboration was as anticipated, refreshing. Naiboi who has lately been popular for singing in his catchy hooks, delivered lyrical bars in this track taking us back to his Rapdamu days. Nyashinski’s bars also never disappointed as usual.
Wangu – Nadia Mukami Ft Sanaipei Tande
Off her latest EP The African Popstar, this track enabled Nadia Mukami to fulfill her long desire to work with celebrated songstress Sanaipei Tande. The song which was a typical ‘That Boy Is Mine’ kind of situation trended on popular music streaming apps and even TikTok. A testament to the fact that this was a fans’ favorite
Watoto Na Pombe – Otile Brown, Mejja and Magix Enga
2020 was a good year for R&B singer Otile Brown as his latest album Just In Love soared high in the music charts. Watoto Na Pombe which was also off this album seemed to be one of the fans’ preferences due to the massive streams it has garnered. After all, a track with Mejja’s magic in it is destined to be a hit.
Hao – Khaligraph Jones Ft Masauti
When Khaligraph and Masauti released the Kiboko Remix last year, there was no doubt that this was a winning team. Hao which focuses on the ugly side of social media bullying in Kenya, not only spreads an important message to users of social media, but is also a certified hit in its own right.
Lewa – Parroty, Kabagazi, OneBoy & Mejja
This song trended on major social media platforms way before its official release. The track which is a certified club banger received a lot of support from fans who were amazed at the immense talent that was poured into this song.
Mastingo – Kahu$h & Chris Kaiga
Easy, cool and a certified hit, this track is the ultimate flex anthem. It was a highly anticipated collaboration that surpassed the fans’ expectations. These two rappers should definitely do more collabos together.
Taniua – Bahati Ft Boondock Gang
Exray’s catchy hook has to be the highlight of this jam. Despite the controversy it sparked, Taniua remains one of the most popular songs on this list.
Bar – Nviiri The Storyteller Ft Femi One
Released after their first collaboration Kipetero Kiyesu, this track’s easy vibes and good music video got the fan’s attention. Both Nviiri and Femi One flaunted their musical abilities making this a club banger that can still be on your ruracio’s playlist.
Yes Bana – Khaligraph Jones Ft Bien
Yet another flex anthem, this song brought together two of the biggest Kenyan stars again. Motif’s fire beat provided a perfect home to Bien’s smooth voice, Khaligraph’s unlimited bars and several freestyles from other artistes. With millions of streams and an AFRIMMA 2020 Award nomination, this track remains a classic.
Wanani (Remix) – Bahati Ft Mejja, Petra, Odi Wa Murang’a, Ssaru, Benzema
It goes without saying that a remix should be better than its original version and this track definitely lives up to this hype. When Bahati added Mejja, Petra, Odi Wa Murang’a, Ssaru and Benzema to this track, a massive hit was born.
Tesa – Nadia Mukami Ft Fena Gitu & Khaligraph Jones
Being Nadia’s 11th Studio single, Tesa was a true testament of her musical growth and versatility. While she makes the best love songs, Nadia showed her fans that she could also produce legit club bangers through this song. Adding Fena Gitu and Khaligraph to this jam paid off as this jam will be on favourite DJ’s mix for a long time.
Nakulike – Kagwe Mungai Ft Naiboi
Off Kagwe Mugai’s album Spectrum, Nakulike is that one song that can help up your pick uplines game no lie. Accompanied with a colorful and retro music video, this jam will have you watching it over and over again as both the audio and music video is catchy.
Unioshe – Collo G Ft Wanavokali
If there was ever a perfect blend of beautiful harmonies and inspirational rap, then this song would be it. This track is refreshing as it is uplifting. As they always say, anything music producer Cedo touches turns into a hit and this song was blessed to have his touch.
Nyakalaga – Japesa & Khaligraph Jones
When the Luo Rap king and the OG teamed up on this, then it was the perfect recipe for a hit. Even though naysayers criticized this jam’s music video but fans absolutely loved it.
Rhumba Japani – Sauti Sol ft Kaskazini, Bensoul, Nviiri The Storyteller, Xenia Manasseh, Okello Max & Nairobi Horns
Off their latest album Midnight Train, Rhumba Japani exposed us more to the very talented artistes from Sol Generation and its associates. Each artiste in this jam nailed their respective verses. The lyrics and entire production were top-notch, proof that Sauti Sol always deliver nothing but the best.
