When you hear a dope track, unless you’re a beat maker and producer yourself, you probably think, ”That beat is fire!” last. Well making music is an art and quite a tedious process that requires hard work, dedication and not to forget a dope beat to begin with. Here’s a look at some of the producers shaking up the game in different measures.
When Khaligraph Jones released “Mazishi” in April last year produced by Ricco Beatz, that was the start of a great career, or so many of us thought. However, Ricco had been making beats all along, adding a little flavor to funny eyewitnesses clips, posting them on his YouTube account. What’s more, he had already made 5 out of 14 beats on King Kaka’s It’s The King Mixtape. What probably added to his buzz the most, was his production on Femi One’s “Pilau Njeri” consecutively followed by “Jah”.
Urban Scorch Records (USR), owned by ChahChah Rich, has been Eko Dyda’s home for a minute. After meeting Eko Dyda back in 2015, it was Chah who convinced Eko Dyda to come back to the music scene, recording Nina One which was awarded Gospel Song of The Year at the 2015 Groove Awards. It was quickly followed up by Haina Budi which also earned itself a nomination for “Best Video of the Year”. Chah’s music has also earned a place on the BBC Countdown, a track called Cheki by Sharama ft. Makadem, which he fused. ChahChah Rich also spearheaded Project SHE by radio presenter Adelle Onyango, a campaign aimed to empower women. Chah has also worked with Shukid, whose record Psykotic held the number one spot on Hits Not Homework for about 2 weeks. Other artists who have experienced the high level skill and professional of ChahChah Rich are Cannibal, AceyGracey, Obinna, Rapper Phil, GKon, Gloria Muliro, Kidis and many more.
Unknown to many, Luodollar’s smash hit Bank Otuch was produced by GKV of Chuo Records. Also a rapper known for his remix to Fat Joe’s “All The Way Up”, GKV has mentored a couple of Hip Hop artists under his label Chuo Records. His most recent contribution to the industry has got to be DJ Mandy, a fast rising female Hip Hop artist who’s response to Femi One’s Pilau Njeri, C.H.E.F (Close Hitting Every Femcee) caught the attention of those who were following the beef.
Atwal Adwok runs a music label under his own name, that has been responsible for giving us talented artists such as Steph Kapela (you better watch out for him), Zonda, Kelvin K and more… The track he produced that got a lot of attention was “All Day”, that featured new school artists such as Kelvin K, Zonda, Chief Mufasa, Timmy Blanco and Khaligraph Jones. One who takes pride in his work and who deems the artists he works with as “the best”, Atwal was also the mix engineer of Kama Kawaida (Kagwe Mungai, Mayonde, Fena and MDQ) which is currently running the airwaves in the country. He has an album to his name, Trap Heaven, released August 28th, last year.
Kagwe Mungai is more than just a pretty face… Or a singer and songwriter. He’s also a good producer. Hits such as “Give It To Me” by himself featuring King Kaka, “Dutch” featuring Fena, “Doctor” and “African Lady” are some of the songs that he has produced. Besides handling his own production, he also leases out his talents to other musicians. His productions include Miss Karun, Thee MC Africa (Taio Tripper), Jackie Chandiru, Fena, MDQ amongst other talented artists. It was Kagwe who produced “Nishike” by Sauti Sol and “Kama Kawaida”.
Making hit songs isn’t something that’s unfamiliar to Pacho Group. Naiboi, Cedo and Jack Jack on the beat have ensured that we know every song that comes out of Pacho is a definite hit. Besides having the usual Pacho tag, “Na tuko tu Pacho kwani boss iko nini”, the songs they have personally worked on usually have individual tags as well.
Cedo has waved his magic wand over tracks such as Tunakubali by Timmy TDat ft. The Kansol, Dandia by Kristoff and the remixes by Kush Tracey and Baby T, Kuthibu by Naiboi featuring Frasha and has co-produced Welle Welle Rmx by TDat featuring All-Stars alongside Naiboi and Usiogope by Timmy TDat featuring DNA, which he co-produced with DNA and Naiboi.
Naiboi, Pacho CEO, started off as a producer before he was an artist and him heading one of the biggest labels in the country hasn’t stopped him from being in the booth as a producer. He’s produced Munde by himself featuring Khaligraph and co-produced his hit Problem (with Jegede and Cedo), just to name a couple.
Jack on the beat has also become a household name, under the empire that is Pacho. Some of the songs he’s produced are Bazo Kizo by Collo, Wale Wabaya by Frasha ft. Naiboi, Kichinjio, King Kaka, Haitosi by Timmy TDat, Sema Ng’we by Fena and Tippy Toe by Femi One ft. Kristoff.
