Kenya Sevens had a bad day one in Sydney 7s, fourth round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, losing two pool matches to drop to Challenge trophy quarters.
Kenya 7s lost 19-12 to Cape Town champions England in the opening match before going down 14-7 to series leaders and Wellington 7s champions South Africa in the second match. They however bounced back to beat Japan 17-12 in the third match to avoid three defeats in one day.
Against England, Kenya scored through Eden Agero and Billy Odhiambo to take a 12-0 first half lead but the Englishmen returned to score three tries while converting one.
Augustine Lugonzo managed the only try against South Africa which was converted by Eden Agero. Seabelo Senatla scored a brace for the Boks.
England topped pool A with nine points, South Africa was second with seven, Kenya third with five while Japan held the last position with three points.
Kenya will now play Russia in the challenge trophy quarters on Sunday Feb 5, 2017 at 2.30am after the latter finished fourth in pool D.
Other challenge trophy quarters will see Scotland play Samoa, Canada take on Japan and France play Papua New Guinea.
In Cup quarters, hosts Australia have a date with Wales, New Zealand takes on Fiji, Mike Friday’s USA play South Africa and England play Argentina.
Despite Collins Injera scoring his 238th try in sevens series, England star Dan Norton’s brace of tries against Japan sent him to second in the all time try scoring list at the HSBC Sevens Series log.
Norton is tied with the Argentine legend Santiago Gomez Cora on 230 tries just a few adrift of Injera.
