Angella Okutoyi, First Kenyan At Tennis Grand Slam Main Draw Arrives In Melbourne Ahead Of Australian Open

Angella Okutonyi has landed in Australia ahead of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam in 2021.

The 17-year-old, currently ranked 60th in the International Tennis Federation junior rankings is the first Kenyan to make it to a Tennis Grand Slam main draw.

Okutonyi who has been at the ITF training center in Casablanca, Morocco, will be up against the world’s top juniors in the first grand slam of the year.

She will take part in J1 Traralgon from Jan. 14 to 19, then she will proceed to The Australian Open from Jan. 22 to 29.

Angela Okutoyi has previously bagged the ITF Under-18 and Africa Under-14 titles.

Crowned Africa Junior tennis champion in 2021 Angela Okutoyi said her goal was to be ranked inside the top 100 and she exceeded her expectations.

clinching the title in 2021 did exceed her set targets.

‘’Me winning the juniors title exceeded my expectations because it also improved my ranking and my goal. ’’She said.

Okutoyi is among 46 players enlisted for the main draw in the girl’s category at the Australian Open.

The player with a 74% overall winning rate is also expected to feature at this year’s Futures Tennis tournament.
