African Originals Introduces ‘Make Your Own’ Experience

Flavoured drinks such as cider or gin come in different varieties to choose from but how exciting can it be to develop your own unique recipe? African Originals opened a kraft room that gives you a chance to have this experience. They had a launch event last month where we got to visit the KO Kraft Room located at Delta Towers along Waiyaki Way.

We were ushered into a colourful room with a massive 360-degree bar with sits all around where other guests were enjoying some cocktails or cider. As soon as we found a spot to seat, the event programme was kicked off by the company’s brand manager Renee Ngamau who introduced the founder for a short speech, and then it was time for some fun lessons from the master distiller.

“Our curious consumer is always wanting to learn more about how products are made, what ingredients are used and where they are sourced from. The KO Kraft Room has been designed as a space for people to learn more about gin and cider and have fun whilst doing it,” Alex Chappatte, founder of African Originals.

After a short gin-tasting experience to identify the flavours that make up the popular spirit, it was time to make our own gin. We got into groups and started to process the instructions given to us by Elias. With the base ingredients and endless flavours in front of us; we let our imaginations lead us. We then handed the drinks back to the mixologists to make some more cocktails as we enjoyed mingling and enyoyed the most delicious mini-bar bites.

The Instagram-worthy space also has a store section that stocks a range of exclusive branded apparel and accessories, including sustainably sourced clothing as well as all Kenyan Originals’ range of products.  

The “Make your Own” experience at the KO Kraft Room was a first for us but it will definitely not be the last because of how much fun it was. It’s a cute plan to do on a one-on-one date or as a group. This October, the classes will be led by Elias, the master distiller, who did the first academic research into making whisky from African grains. The KO Kraft Room is equally fortunate to have Ian on board, the youngest distiller on Kenyan soil. His passion for exploration, product development, and the environment are unmatched.
