For beginners, exfoliating can seem like an extra step. However, exfoliating is necessary for your skincare routine as cleansing is. Furthermore, our skin continuously regenerates and renews itself, causing dead cells to accumulate on the skin surface. It’s therefore important for us to exfoliate to remove the dullness and maintain glowing skin. Furthermore, exfoliation helps in preventing the formation of blackheads and whiteheads- also known as comedones. In addition, exfoliating brightens and freshens our complexion.
Here are a few tips to guide you if you want to add exfoliating to your skincare routine:-
Exfoliate 1-3x a week, depending on your skin type. As we age, our cell turnover rates decrease, making it extra crucial to exfoliate to unclog pores and brighten skin.
Patch test any new active you incorporate into your skincare routine. Wait 24-48 hours after applying the active on one small area of the jaw to see if you’re allergic to it.
Add one new active at a time, especially if your skin is sensitive. This way, your skin builds tolerance, and you can know which active is irritating.
Start with a low concentration and go slow with the frequency (1-3x a week). Increase usage after a month or until your skin adjusts.
Moisturizers and SPF are necessary daily regardless. However, be sure to apply moisturizer right after exfoliating to repair the skin barrier and SPF daily to protect skin since skin is more sensitive to sunlight post-exfoliation.
Avoid physical exfoliants like scrubs on acne-prone skin or inflamed skin because these will irritate acne more.
Avoid waxing or other professional treatments like chemical peels a week before and a few days after exfoliating to avoid skin damage or hyperpigmentation.
