2016 has been a great year for 254 acts in the music scene. We have seen artists roll up their sleeves and deliver some quality work, trying to match international standards. Music Video budgets have shot up and the output is the best we have seen. Some artists have flown out to shoot parts of their scenes, others have employed the most creative ways to capture eyes of the consumers. Artists have also expanded their horizons and landed major collaborations with international acts hence expanding their reach.
With this being the second part of Top Videos in 2016, we have compiled 10 more music videos which topped local charts, were most popular on local media and had some traction in the clubs. The Kenyan audience one hard troupe to please but all in all, they embraced this local acts for 2016 and simmered down the noise that Nigerian music was taking over Kenya.
Nyashinki made his return to the scene after a 10-year hiatus and he really came back strong with the anthem- Now You Know whose video takes the accolades of first Kenyan song to hit 1 million views on Youtube.
Khaligraph Jones went public about his relationship with femcee Cashy and they released a hit music video titled Micasa Sucasa. The song sampling Mobb Deep’s Original track Hell on Earth also hit 1 million views, a first for Papa Jones.
The Boy Band Sauti Sol had a phenomenal year and I can boldly state they are the 254 Flag bearers for the year. The band has been on numerous stages, toured the world, been constantly on the move but they had time to release new music and shoot videos as well. This Jam, Kuliko Jana they visited their former High School and teamed up with the current students to produce this masterpiece. They views on Youtube also are way past 1.5 million.
Octopizzo had a notable stint. He teamed up with Vicmass Luodoallar and had the megahit Bank Otuch. the song had a cross-culture appeal as not many people fully understand the lyrics but it is a fan favorite across the country.
Gospel sensation star Willy Paul who is always in the news for not spreading the gospel scored a couple of hits but his anthem for 2016 is ‘Fanya’. The track is heavy on the streets and in the clubs.
The group P-Unit had a club banger -Wabe which did so well on the charts on local media. Frasha and Gabu teaming up with the mix Master Dj Joe Mfalme had the video showing the fun side of Kenyan clubbing culture.
Collo who is now on the Gospel front had his 1st hit- Bazokizo and the dance propelled it to number one on various charts.
Another Gospel hit that did well on the secular scene was ‘Thitima Anthem’ by Kymo and Stigah. The video was shot using phone cameras and it is a hilarious video.
A new group in the scene Everlast teamed up with Kristoff and Naiboi to work in Gudi Gudi. The electrifying club banger is a serious contender for song of the year in the 254. With the catchy lyrics and video, it is a favorite among many.
The Collabo of the year goes to Sauti Sol and Nigerian Superstar Yemi Alade on Africa. The video is everything and the collabo is a perfect masterpiece. With over 3 million views, it was a good bargain for 2016. just check out the video below.
